Picking the right size is the single biggest factor in whether wall art looks intentional or lost. The good news: designers rely on a few simple ratios, and once you know them you can size any wall in minutes.

The three rules

  • Two-thirds rule: art over furniture should be about 60 to 75 percent of the furniture’s width.
  • Eye level: the center of the art sits 57 to 60 inches from the floor.
  • Gap: leave 6 to 10 inches between furniture and the bottom of the frame.

Step 1: Measure the space

Measure the width of the furniture the art will hang over. If there is no furniture, measure the wall section you want to feature, between windows, doors or corners. Write down the height available too, especially above beds with tall headboards.

Step 2: Apply the two-thirds rule

Multiply the furniture width by 0.66 to 0.75. The result is the ideal total width for your art, whether it is one piece or a group.

FurnitureTypical widthIdeal art widthSuggested sizes

Standard sofa84 in55 to 63 inOne 40 x 60 in, or three 16 x 24 in
Queen bed60 in40 to 45 inOne 30 x 40 in, or two 20 x 30 in
King bed76 in50 to 57 inOne 40 x 60 in, or three 20 x 30 in

Desk48 in30 to 36 inOne 16 x 24 in or 20 x 30 in

Step 3: Choose orientation

Wide furniture usually calls for landscape art or a horizontal row of pieces. Narrow walls, hallways and the spaces between windows suit portrait orientation, which also makes a low ceiling feel taller.

The sizes above use a 2:3 ratio, which matches photos from most cameras and phones in landscape or portrait. That means your image can be printed with little or no cropping. Our custom metal prints come in 8 x 12, 12 x 18, 16 x 24 and 20 x 30 inches for exactly this reason.

Step 4: Get the height right

Galleries hang art so its center is at average eye level, 57 to 60 inches from the floor. In living rooms, the furniture rule takes over: keep 6 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa or headboard and the bottom of the art, so the two read as one composition. In dining rooms, you can go a little lower because people are seated.

Step 5: Test before you drill

Cut pieces of kraft paper or cardboard to the size you are considering and tape them to the wall. Live with them for a day. It is the easiest way to avoid buying art that is too small, which is by far the most common mistake.

Sizing a gallery wall

Treat the whole group as one large piece. Lay the frames out on the floor first, keep 2 to 3 inches between each piece, and make the total width follow the two-thirds rule. Mixing one large anchor print with smaller pieces around it gives the most balanced result.

Common sizing mistakes

  • Too small: a single small print floating on a big wall.
  • Too high: art hung near the ceiling, disconnected from the furniture.
  • Too wide: art wider than the sofa or bed below it.
  • Ignoring the room: large open-plan spaces need larger art than you think.

Frequently asked questions

What size wall art should go above a couch?

Choose art about two-thirds the width of the couch. Above a standard 84-inch sofa, that means a piece or a group around 50 to 60 inches wide.

How high should wall art be hung?

Hang the center of the artwork at about 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the art.

Is it better to go bigger or smaller with wall art?

When in doubt, go bigger. Art that is too small is the most common mistake and makes a wall feel empty. If one large piece is not possible, group several smaller ones.

What size is a statement piece?

Anything from about 24 x 36 inches and up reads as a statement piece on a standard wall. On a smaller wall, 16 x 24 or 20 x 30 inches already creates a strong focal point.
